First Sale Doctrine

Definition:
An exception to the exclusive right of a copyright owner to distribute copies or phonorecords of the copyrighted work. Under this principle, the copyright owner has the right to sell a copy of a book but not the right to control subsequent sales of that copy.

Musical Work

Definition:
A category of copyrightable work expressed in notation or sounds. A musical work can be embodied and fixed in physical objects that are classified as either "copies" (sheet music) or "phonorecords" (e.g., compact discs or tapes).

Notice Of Allowability

Definition:
A notification to the patent applicant that the application has been placed in condition for allowance.

Compilation

Definition:
A copyrightable work consisting of a collection and assembly of preexisting material. The assembly must exhibit at least minimal originality in the selection, organization, and arrangement of the material without making any internal changes in it.

Best Mode

Definition:
A condition for the grant of a valid patent. An inventor must describe the best method he or she knows for carrying out the invention.

Washington Treaty

Definition:
Formally known as The Treaty on Intellectual Property in Respect of Integrated Circuits; China was among the first countries to sign this treaty, but the United States and Japan did not sign it due to disagreements with compulsory licences.
